Reform public defense - Times Union: "Ontario County has agreed to limit public defense caseloads. This is vital. Lawyers with too many cases can't spend enough time on any. But the outdated numerical standards the settlement looks to are too high. Hiring more attorneys or paying private lawyers to take any overflow requires more funding, not provided by the settlement.
The agreement sets the current budget for public defense as the minimum the county must spend for the duration of the agreement. While better than funding cuts, this is not a solution."
