Instead, they offer unsubstantiated opinion (many times agressively) as an alternative to fact. That would be fine, but they have no desire or intention to prove that opinion with fact and instead take great offense to having that opinion disproved by fact. When I grew up, having opinion discredited by fact was called learning!
The act of shouting down facts with unsubstantiated opinion is regarded as a right by many people. We hear things like "lets agree to disagree" or "stop bashing his opinion" or "everybody is entitled to an opinion". What has been lost is the simple fact that in many of these arguments, there is most certainly a right and wrong. It follows that not all opinions are good opinions and not all opinions are valid opinions, they are, well, just opinions. "
