How to Replace Flute Pads : Instrument Clinic, Band Instrument Repair Supplies
How to Replace Flute Pads : Instrument Clinic, Band Instrument Repair Supplies: "All pads should be punctured on the side with a pad prick or needle to allow moisture to be released when replacing flute pads. Apply heat to the flute pad cups that require adhesive and thoroughly remove any leftover adhesive out of the flute pad cup. Be careful not to burn yourself and have fire safety equipment readily accessible during flute pads replacement. Once the flute pad cup is clean, insert 1-3 adhesive pellets in the flute pad cup and apply heat. You need enough heat to melt the pellets, but do not heat to boiling. Gently insert the flute pad into the flute pad cup and allow the key to cool. Replace the key on the flute and, using an appropriate heat source (ideally a micro torch), carefully apply a small amount heat to the flute pad cup. You need to be extremely careful not to over heat the adhesive. Allow the replacement flute pad to level itself over the tone hole. You may need to adjust the flute pad with a pad slick, or other small, flat piece of metal. Check the flute pad for leaks with the feeler gauge or leak light. If there is a leak, apply heat and make the appropriate adjustments to the flute pad."

Flute Pad Installation / Replacing flute pads
Flute Pad Installation / Replacing flute pads: "But, don't use centering as your only guide, sometimes they just don't. The pads MUST be level or the flute won't play.
DON'T just start bending the fronts of the pad cups down. The smart thing to do here is: DON'T BEND ANY KEYS IF YOU CAN GET OUT OF IT. And most important: DO NOT USE ANY PARTIAL WASHERS. So normally, they do not distort. You may level the pad side to side by twisting the key arm a little or you may lower the front of the cup by bending it down. This most likely will bend the edge of the pad cup a little, but not enough to be noticeable. "

Flute Pad Installation / Replacing flute pads
Flute Pad Installation / Replacing flute pads: "You notice, these groups of keys are all mounted on the same hinge points. Are things getting a little clearer? Now, if a pad is still lighter in the back, take the key off and add some more thickness. If it is now lighter in the front you may want to remove a little until it is the same pressure or LEVEL all around. Be sure you check the bottom stack post. If those pads get progressively worse, the post needs to move. If the post is bent toward the holes, the pads will get progressively lighter in back; if away, heavier and the pads won't be centered either. "

AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE BALL AND CLAW SLANT FRONT DESK c. 1770
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE BALL AND CLAW SLANT FRONT DESK c. 1770: "Condition Report:
Refinished in the last century, some sun-fading to surface, minor dings/abrasions/scratches throughout and old surface filling is visible in the deep swirling mahogany grains; surface overall is quite rich and very attractive with a mild cognac color. Pulls are period replacements in nearly the same holes as the originals. Hinges and locks replaced, one drawer lock absent - no key. All drawers have some hairline cracking and color fading, nothing particularly noteworthy. Runners added to underside of drawers to supplement frame. One backboard removed and shellacked during the 19th century - all backboards original, reattached with screws as the cut nails probably lost grip. Left loper with a pieced repair. Untouched feet"
